There was some change in the weather from the last time I spoke to Michael Kelly. We have just had the wettest couple of months on record and nothing much was happening in the fields even though it was July 13th.

Michaelhad made a change to his Drill / Power Harrow Combination in March 2012. The newKverneland Accord  i-Drill PRO,three meter machine, on the face of it looks like the old one. However this machine has a bigger one tonne hopper, giving Michael a full 16 acres on one fill. The biggest single difference is however, the newCX Ultra Discsnow fitted with press wheels.

“I can’t believe the difference” says Michael. “I’ve gone in to non tilled fields and sown direct with no problems. I’ve gone into fields where the seeding rate was too low and stitched in additional seed without disturbing the growing crop and I’ve gone and sown into headlands which had a lot of traffic and sowed direct.”

“One of the biggest surprises I’ve noticed is where I was asked to provide wild bird cover/feed. I went straight into an area with heavy previous cover, unploughed, and did a perfect job in sowing”.

The newUltra Discsare strong and add a bit of weight to the combination. I don’t need to set the pressure at the extreme or anything near it, to get good penetration. The press wheels at the rear, close the slit, but also provide excellent depth control so I don’t bury the seed.—really important when sowing oil seed rape.

I’ve done grass seed this year, using a mix of slug pellets as well. In forty acres I had 1.5 kg left over when done. That’s some accuracy!

“This time I went for the hydraulically driven fan. I find this better in that I always have grain transport and am not waiting for the PTO to create the wind before moving”.

“This machine is not cheap” says Michael, “but I’ve been asked back to do specialised jobs because the machine can do it—that’s the difference at the end of the day” “I traded in my six year old machine to local Dealer Hegarty’s and it was sold the same day”.
